Soon, I hope. I’m slowly writing the new chapter of Moonrise. I have a dragon-themed flash fiction on my mind… also some experimental stuff. I have a busy brain, it never lets me rest, even if I try hard not to write.
You're still young enough to fix that. Don't make the mistakes I made when I put career over family. Although in my case, I was a career soldier and often gone for long periods. Take time out between paragraphs to hug and play with your kids and spend time with your husband. You won't regret it later on in life.
I'm very happy to hear that you're happy, but I'm afraid that I need to disagree with you on one point. Going to elementary school as a special ed student in the '60s, I was often called a "retard" by bullies. It didn't feel good and I'm sure the name calling is part of why I developed my inferiority complex. It's a mean word in general and can be devastating for a kid's self esteem. I know that it was once a medical term, but even the doctors have since realized that it's not helpful to stick labels on children that can then be used as weapons by the bullies. It's a cruel and immature way to insult someone.
The name calling on Substack is rampant. I really wish people would discuss their differences in a mature manner. Once the slurs and labels start flying, most people stop listening and let their anger take over - and at that point the discussion is over, and you've lost your chance to learn or teach.
The last thing I wanted to mention is the sad status of the word "fuck." It used to be a powerful curse, but was rarely used. Once upon a time it was only used when someone was really REALLY angry. I use it very rarely, with the consequence that when I do say it, people know they've gone too far. Modern society has neutered the word "fuck." It's repeated so often, it barely causes a raised eyebrow these days. Strong curses can be very useful, but we should not be wasting them in idle banter.
What we say and write matters. Sooner or later, it all trickles down to the younger generation, and we really should be more careful about what we're teaching the kids. I'm not saying that everyone has to like each other, but the real world is horrible enough without Substackers being mean to each other. I'm rambling, but this is all so sad. I wish people would please stop using words as weapons... it hurts.
Move forward, put in the work, validate yourself, and fuck the opining of the peanut gallery. A solid formula for victory of the self.
I'm glad you feel like you got your mojo back. So, when's the next story?

Staying busy is not a bad thing as long as you take some time and spend it on family things as well. Something I struggle with at times.
Me too. Husband often says - I’m not there with the rest of the family…🙁
