My guess for why they waited? The Queen's Feast is a well known ceremony, and it's also known that the various Lords and Ladies of the realm are required to send representatives to the celebrations. Stella may be referred to as the Witch by the people who live near her woodland castle, but they also know she's the wife of Lord Julyan, which means they'd know one or both of them would likely be gone at this time. I'm willing to bet it was noticed that Julyan and Rem left without Stella so, using the death of the butcher's boy as an excuse to do what they've always wanted, the people of the region set out to burn the witch.
Now we just have to wait for the next couple chapters to see if my guess is right. As if I didn't already have enough reasons to anticipate the continuation of this story.
And you doubt your abilities to write good stories. This is a good as many I have read through the years. Now you just have to overcome your doubts and your critics to show the world just how good you are.
Nice! While reading I got that the "turning into the dragon" curse could be symbolic of political power in some ways and those who dislike it but are forced along in some way to take part.
On very rare occasions. But mostly the guys and gals living in my head, let me sleep. The ideas come on their own. It’s like puzzles I love to solve. I have been stuck a bit, but usually the characters find their way.
Erko's Granddaughter. Cool! A wolfling and a Dragon pairing. A snakeling and and wolfling pairing as well.
You knew that I'd like this. I wonder why someone waited until that day to burn down the castle....
Nothing like suspense. 4/5 stars, my horror-flower writer...

I love all the complications you come up with for your characters - does it keep you awake at night trying to figure out ways to rescue them?
