A cheerful laughter rang through the morning air. The three maidens stood on the watchtower as every single morning, observing the young soldiers marching through the courtyard.

“Do you not think him handsome?” The youngest, a golden-haired girl pointed at a young man sitting on the bench further from the soldiers, and reading. The wind played in his long, coal black hair, while his green eyes delved deep into the book.

“That one? He’s hideous!” Her eldest sister, a black-haired girl wrinkled her nose.

“Is that the new scribe?” The third one asked. She flipped her chestnut-brown hair.

“Yes, the most boring man in the whole castle and our little Jewel just had to choose him,” the eldest smirked at her young sister.

“Honestly, Jewel! Your taste in men is pathetic!” The other sister added, flipping her hair again.

“Hush! Father is coming! Run!” The youngest, named Jewel scurried away with her golden hair shining in the morning sun.

The eldest secretly gave the black-haired man a one last look, before she followed her sister. So did the other sister, flipping her chestnut-brown hair, she even smiled at the sight of the reading man and then ran away.

They did not see the man himself looking up at the spot on the tower where the maidens just stood. A smirk full of ridicule rose on his face. The young man shook his head and turned his gaze back to the book.
